At a briefing following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, key developments in Nigeria's aviation sector were unveiled. The Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, announced that FEC approved a total of N7.9 billion for contracts aimed at bolstering aviation infrastructure. One significant project is the establishment of a Fire Truck Maintenance and Refurbishment Centre in Katsina, which will enhance the operational readiness of airport fire services. Additionally, a contract was awarded for an Aircraft Maintenance Centre in Abuja, intended to localize aircraft maintenance operations. This project includes: - Building structure development awarded to Messrs Ingenious Nigeria Limited at N3.98 billion. - Civil works awarded to Messrs Glovesly Pro-Project for N1.12 billion. Both projects are set to be completed within 12 months. The establishment of this Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility is part of a broader roadmap to transform Nigeria's aviation sector. The minister emphasized that the initiative would end the country's reliance on overseas aircraft maintenance, which drains labor and foreign exchange. The facility aims to enable local maintenance, transfer critical technology, and potentially lead to the production of aircraft parts and assembly in Nigeria. This development aligns with the government's commitment to promoting self-reliance in strategic sectors while creating local job opportunities and conserving foreign currency.
